Bensheim is the largest city in the Bergstrasse district. Its 9 districts, which extend from the Hessian Ried to the edge of the Odenwald, reflect the charm of this beautiful region between Heidelberg and Darmstadt with its vineyards. The "Hessian Bergstrasse" wine-growing region is one of the warmest regions in Germany. The pedestrian zone with its half-timbered houses invites you to linger. The many restaurants, cafés and rustic wine bars are characteristic of the lively and attractive city. The wine festival in September, the Christmas market in December or the citizens' festival in June attract visitors from near and far to Bensheim. Recommended excursion destinations are the Auerbach Castle, the Fürstenlager State Park and the Kirchberghäuschen, from which you can have a wonderful view as far as the Palatinate. Bensheim is also the starting point for excursions to the Odenwald, e.g. to the Felsenmeer in Reichenbach or the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Lorsch Monastery. It takes about 30 minutes to get to Heidelberg and Frankfurt via the BAB 5. And about 20 minutes to get to Darmstadt.There are numerous hiking and cycling trails available for sporting activities. From leisurely adventure cyclists on an excellently developed network of cycle paths in the Hessian Ried to ambitious mountain bikers on the Bergstrasse or in the Odenwald, the existing range of options caters to everyone.
